چکیده

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems typically have a static dictionary of word pronunciations for matching acoustic models to words. In this work, we argue that, in fact, pronunciations in spontaneous speech are dynamic and that ASR systems should change models in accordance with contextual factors. Two variables, speaking rate and word frequency, should be particularly promising for determining dynamic pronunciations, according to the linguistic literature. We analyze the relationship between these factors and realized pronunciations through a statistical exploration of the e€ects of these factors at the word, syllable, and phone levels in the Switchboard corpus. Both increased speaking rate and word likelihood can induce a signi®cant shift in probabilities of the pronunciations of frequent words. However, the interplay between all of these variables in the realization of pronunciations is complex. We also con®rm the intuition that variations in these factors correlate with changes in ASR system performance for both the Switchboard and Broadcast News corpora. Ó 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Effects of Speaking Rate and Word Frequency on Conversational Pronunciations

The possible set of pronunciations in continuous speech corpora change dynamically with many factors. Two variables , speaking rate and word predictability, seemed to be promising candidates for integration into dynamic ASR pronunciation models; however, our initial eeorts to incorporate these factors into phone-level decision tree models met with limited success. In this paper, we connrm the i...

The Effect of Word Meaning on Speech DysFluency in Adults with Developmental Stuttering

Objectives: Stuttering is one of the most prevalent speech and language disorders. Symptomology of stuttering has been surveyed from different aspects such as biological, developmental, environmental, emotional, learning and linguistic. Previous researches in English-speaking people have suggested that some linguistic features such as word meanings may play a role in the frequency of speech non...

Lexical Access in Persian Speaking Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment

Introduction: Word retrieval problems are among the limitations observed in children with specific language impairment during the initial schooling years. These restrictions are predictive of reading problems and poor performance at school. Additionally, studies on lexical access in Persian speaking children are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and compare naming accuracy and ...

Word-level rate of speech modeling using rate-specific phones and pronunciations

Variations in rate of speech (ROS) produce changes in both spectral features and word pronunciations that affect ASR systems. To cope with these effects, we propose to use rate-specific phone models and pronunciations for ROS modeling at the word level. Words are given three types of pronunciations — fast, slow, and medium — consisting of rate-specific phone models, respectively. This approach ...

The Grammatical Abilities in a Speech Sample of Persian-speaking Children With Cochlear Implants

Objectives: Studies reported that children with Cochlear Implant (Cl) presented difficulties in grammatical acquisition. The Persian language is inflectional. The present study aimed to compare word-level inflections in the language samples of CI recipients and healthy-hearing children. Methods: Thirty children were recruited in this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study. The Language S...
